Gravely ill Pa. firefighter escorted home

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Firefighters from more than a dozen Pennsylvania fire departments escorted a gravely ill colleague home.

Twenty-three-year-old Robert Sweigart, a firefighter with Myerstown's Goodwill Fire Co., was being treated for his second bout of leukemia but his treatments weren't working.

Karen Sweigart tells the Lebanon Daily News (http://bit.ly/1iNxuYh) her son decided he wanted to die at home.

Myerstown firefighters were waiting to greet him Wednesday when he left Hershey Medical Center. But they weren't the only ones.

More than than 20 pieces of apparatus from 15 fire companies covering three counties joined the convoy bringing Sweigart to his family's home 30 miles away in Hinkletown, Lancaster County.

Sweigart waved to the crowd as he was carried inside on a gurney. Firefighters lined up outside to wait their turn to say goodbye.
