Alex E. "Al" Dietz, 92, of Pottsville, passed away Friday at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street, according to an obituary in the Pottsville Republican Herald today.

Born in New York City, Aug. 21, 1921, he was a son of Frances Auslander.

Al was the widower of Adelaide G. Picus Dietz, to whom he was married 59 years, who passed away Oct. 3, 2013.

He was a graduate of Pottsville High School, Class of 1939, and attended Penn State University.

From 1941 to 1953, Al worked for the Pottsville Journal, 1953-1962 the Pottsville Republican and from 1962 to 1995, he was the Schuylkill County court reporter. Al covered the court news for six papers: Ashland News, Shenandoah Evening Herald, Tamaqua Courier, Mahanoy City Record, Hazelton Standard Speaker and the Times News in 2014.

He was a freelance reporter for the Harrisburg Patriot News, Philadelphia Inquirer and the Reading Times.

Among his lead stories, he covered the Lillian Reese Trial (robbery of John Rich) for the German Magazine "Der Spiegle." He covered three presidents' visits to Pottsville: Truman, Kennedy and Nixon.

Al retired form the Treasury Office in 1983.

Religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Robert A Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery, Saint Clair.
