One driver was taken to the hospital in a violent, grinding Rush Township crash involving a car and a vehicle towing a utility trailer.

Emergency units from Hometown and Quakake responded to reports of a collision with entrapment about 5:20 p.m. Monday on Route 309 about one mile north of the Hometown intersection.According to police Nicholas Kopp, 28, of Lansford, was traveling north on Claremont Avenue in a 2008 BMW when he apparently fell asleep, crossed the median, and struck a southbound trailer connected to a 2006 Chevrolet driven by Roy Horning, 31, Leola.The southbound pickup/utility vehicle appeared to be hauling construction equipment, steel pipes and tools.The force of the collision tore the trailer from the Chevrolet, turning it upside down, and spilling some of its cargo onto the highway. Horning's trailer ended up partially in the woods, as did Kopp's BMW.The force of the car hitting the trailer was strong enough to break steel chains, part of the trailer hitch system.Investigating was police Sgt. Duane Frederick, who said Kopp was at fault and will be cited.Debris was scattered along a 100-foot area located just north of Basile's Restaurant and Northeast Hydro-Seeding Co. Hometown fire police and other emergency responders cleaned the highway before it could reopened.Traffic was stopped on Route 309 southbound for a short time, causing a backup.
