Driver admits fatally striking 85-year-old woman

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle in the death of an 85-year-old woman in front of her northeastern Pennsylvania home.

The Express-Times (http://bit.ly/PUGfcg ) said 34-year-old Christopher Murphy of Warrington, Bucks County, entered the plea Monday in Lehigh County Court.

Prosecutors said Murphy struck Helen Kemmerer last May because he was distracted when his cellphone fell onto the floor of his Nissan Pathfinder.

Kemmerer died at the scene.

Sentencing is set for May 9. The felony charge carries a maximum of seven years in prison but prosecutor Paul Bernardino III said a standard-range sentence would be three months to one year.
