Indians and Bears get boys soccer wins

Lehighton and Pleasant Valley won boys soccer matches and the Jim Thorpe boys cross country team won the Cardinal Classic at Pine Grove over the weekend.

BOYS SOCCERLehighton-No. LehighThe Tribe continued their winning ways with a 3-0 shutout win over Northern Lehigh.Anthony Rossino scored two goals and added an assist, while Joe Marks and Derek Berger had assists.Lehighton outshot the Bulldogs 15-5 with Nolehi's Nate Rex stopping 12 shots on goal.Blue Mt.-PalmertonBlue Mountain defeated the Bombers 5-1 in a non-league contest.A 1-1 deadlock was blown open in the second half as the Blue Eagles recorded four unanswered goals to take the win. Christian Tobash's two goals, while a goal apiece from Jonathan Benner, Bryant Penberth and Fritz Miller accounted for the Blue Mountain offense. Estrada also had an assist for Catty.Jim Thorpe got a late goal from Billy Sterling, off a feed from Jake Burkhart.Carter Rodriguez had 13 saves for the Olympians.CROSS COUNTRYNorthwestern-PIAA Foundation InvitationalNorthwestern traveled to Hershey to take part in the PIAA Foundation Invitational.The Tigers finished third as a team on the girls' side with 171 points, while the boys finished in ninth.Carly Pierce led the Tigers with a team best 11th place finish on the girls' side, while Ryan Cerrone finished in 44th for a boys' best.Jim Thorpe, Tamaqua at Pine Grove InvitationalBoth Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua took part in the Pine Grove Invitationalon Saturday.The Olympians' Jonathan Condly crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 17:29, to lead the Olympians to a first place finish with 42 points. Teammate Christian Fields followed right behind in second in 17:32. Tamaqua's Dustin Sabol (17:53) and the Olympians' Jake Saxon (18:06) finished sixth and seventh respectively to grab top-10 finishes. Tayler Kidder also managed to match that output by scoring four goals for Jim Thorpe, as well. Rebecca Cressman scored the other two goals, while Ilse Hassler and Kimmie Conway added assists.Jim Thorpe outshot Weatherly 27-1 with the Lady Wreckers' Cheyanne Wallish stopping 17 shots on goal.GIRLS VOLLEYBALLWhitehall-Pleasant ValleyThe Lady Bears defeated Whitehall in a non-league volleyball match, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-19.Leading the charge offensively for PV was Mackenzie Dorney with 16 digs and nine kills, while Courtney Miller followed with 13 kills and five blocks.
