Numerous police agencies joined in to stop a man operating a borrowed pickup truck and involved in a high speed chase Sunday, which led from Tamaqua into West Penn Township, with speeds reaching more than 100 miles per hour.

The chase began just after 1 p.m. near the Five Points intersection (SR309 and SR209), when the pickup truck driver failed to stop for a red traffic light. The driver also failed to stop for a Tamaqua police cruiser that had its emergency lights and siren on.He pulled into the area of the Fegley Mini Mart and then drove through the lot and almost struck a child.He went south on Route 309 out of the borough.The chase continued past the South Tamaqua intersection (309 and SR443) and onto the Ridge Cup. As the suspect crested and started to descend the hill, he was struck in the rear by a pursuing Tamaqua police cruiser. The chase stopped at that point with West Penn Township Police arriving at the scene within seconds.A state trooper from the Fogelsville barracks was sitting along 309 just south of the scene, ready to deploy spike sticks. Soon additional troopers arrived from the Frackville barracks.The suspect was handcuffed and sat on the roadway. He was later identified as Timothy Ewer, 50, whose last known address was 560 North St., in Doylestown, Bucks County.He muttered several times he was, "born an alcoholic," and requested a cigarette. The suspect stated the pickup truck was owned by a friend. A check was run on Ewer and it was indicated that he has six prior driving under the influence (DUI) convictions and now faces a seventh charge.The suspect was arraigned before duty District Judge Anthony Kilker, of Shenandoah, via video at the county prison in Pottsville, on charges of DUI, fleeing and attempting to elude police while DUI, recklessly endangering another person, DUI of a controlled substance, habitual offender, and summary counts of failing to obey traffic signals, reckless driving and driving while operating privileges are suspected or revoked.Police added that Ewer was given a test and the result was a .196BAC. He was committed to the county prison after failing to post $25,000 cash bail set by Kilker.
