Appeals benefit Mahanoy district

Mahanoy Area School District added $330.611 to its assessment on properties for 2014 taxes through appeals filed against 27 properties in its district, including 11 in Barnesville, Ryan Township, which were granted by the Schuylkill County Assessment Appeals Board at a hearing in the Schuylkill County Courthouse.

The school district asked for the increase claiming the properties were purchased at prices higher than they had been assessed. The assessment board based its decision on the sale price.The market value and assessment were increased on the following:Neil M. and Kimberly M. Denchy, 27 Rosemont Avenue, Barnesville, Ryan Township, market value increased from $140,481 to $228,158 and the assessment increased from $70,240 to $114,080, an increase in assessment of $43,840.William F. and Erica S. Stoyer, 15 Wood Avenue, Barnesville, Ryan Township, market value increased from $93,248 to $173,600 and assessment from $46,255 to $86,800, an increase of $40,175 in assessment.Karen Kurzinsky, 21 Catherine Street, Barnesville, Ryan Township, market value increased from $73,340 to $131,842 and assessment from $36,670 to $65,920, an increase in assessment of $29,350.Sharon A. Clawson, 1038 East Pine Street, Mahanoy City, market value increased from $38,060 to $53,568 and assessment from $19,030 to $26,785, an increase of $7,755 in assessment; on property at 1034 East Pine Street, Mahanoy City, market value reduced from $1,840 to $1,490 and assessment lowered from $920 to $450, a decrease of $175 in assessment and on property at 1038 East Pine Street, Mahanoy City, market value lowered from $1,840 to $1,490 and assessment decreased from $920 to $745, a decrease of $175 in assessment.Grant TaxExemptionsBlythe Township Water Authority received exemption from taxes on a parcel of land in New Philadelphia, where it has installed a pumping station. The land had been assessed at $750.Schuylkill County Municipal Authority received an exemption on a parcel of land on the north side of Fort LebanonRoad, Auburn Borough, for purpose of running a sewer line. The property was assessed at $3,545.New Castle Township received exemption on a pole building it has construction on a parcel leased from Reading Anthracite Company. It has a 75 year lease on the property which is assessed at $750.Glory of Faith International Church received exemption on the property at 117 West Oak Street, Shenandoah, which it obtained from the Immanuel Korean-American Presbyterian Church. The property is used as a church facility as it has 32 members. It was assessed at $15,030.
