The resignation of Mahoning Township tax collector Richard Swarcheck was accepted by the Mahoning Township board of supervisors during last week.

The letter enabled the board to move forward with a temporary replacement until the municipal election occurs next week and the new collector starts in January.Swarcheck became incapacitated late last month, which created turmoil in the township as taxing bodies and residents alike were not sure what would happen and how they could be assured their tax payments would be properly recorded.Since the last board meeting, Vice Chairperson Frank Ruch and solicitor Tom Nanovic met with other officials at the Lehighton School District Administration building to determine how to proceed after the resignation.During that meeting, the Lehighton School district decided to collect its taxes at the administration office, collecting both the real estate and occupational taxes. Mahoning Township will assume collection responsibilities for the Local Services tax and the township's amusement taxes.Gorman will be conducting the audit on the tax collector's books, and the cost will be divided in three parts unless the county decides not to audit its portion of the taxes.Also, during the workshop and meeting, supervisors decided to solicit proposals from engineers for their 2014 rates, as well as getting information from their current engineer as well.
