Two persons were charged with burglary and related counts following an incident that occurred on Sept. 6 about 4:32 p.m. in Jim Thorpe.
Borough police said at the time and date stated officers on patrol observed a man in the area of 516 Lentz Trail putting gas into a vehicle. The location was the site of prior break-ins, police said.
The man was questioned and identified as Stephen Karpinski, 35, of 346 Floral Drive, Red Lion, York County. In the vehicle Karpinski was putting gas into was Tina DeMatteo, 27, of 1608 Mineral Spring Road, Pottstown.
Police said they also noticed the garage door of the residence was open and the plywood that was securing the back door had been removed.
Karpinski and DeMatteo were taken into custody and transported to the police station. During an interview Karpinski admitted removing the plywood and entering the home. He said he walked through the home and noticed it had been ransacked. Upon leaving he noticed an older model car and stated he siphoned gas from it to put it in his vehicle, which he was doing when police arrived.
Police charged Karpinski with burglary, criminal conspiracy to commit burglary, and criminal trespass, all felonies, and misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property. DeMatteo was charged with criminal conspiracy to commit burglary, a felony, and misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property and criminal trespass.
