A committee is beginning the planning for Lehighton borough's 150th anniversary, which will be in the summer of 2016.
Autumn Abelovsky of the 150th anniversary committee said a kick-off meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the Lehighton Municipal Building.
"Our hope is to gather a group of interested volunteers to serve on various 150th Anniversary Committees," Abelovsky said. "We are also seeking input from the community. Local historians will be present to give us a look into the 100th Celebration for those who may like to volunteer but were not around 50 years ago. We have chosen to begin this journey now, as to give ourselves ample time to plan the best celebration possible."
She referred to the borough's centennial celebration in 1966 during which there was a large parade, formation of Brothers of the Brush and Sisters of the Swish organizations, and many other community events.
"We are asking that any organization that would like to be involved in the planning of or the festivities, please send one or two representatives from your organization to our Kick-off meeting," she added.
Abelovsky recently attended a meeting of Lehighton Borough Council and received endorsement to begin planning for the 150th celebration.
Also actively involved in the planning will be Lehighton Borough Manage Nicole Beckett.
"The centennial celebration, held in the Summer of 1966, brought our community together for 15 days of fellowship and festivities," Abelovsky noted. "While it is not the intention to copy the centennial celebration completely, we would like to draw upon the popular events that were held, as well as brainstorm new and exciting ways to memorialize 150 years of a town that is near and dear to many of us."
