Deer causes crash involving 4 vehicles

State police at the Frackville barracks said no one was hurt in a four-vehicle crash at 5:32 p.m. Nov. 8 on Route 54 in Ryan Township.

Police said the vehicles were traveling west on Route 54, about 640 feet south of Barnesville Drive, when a deer jumped onto the roadway and was immediately struck by an unknown vehicle. Police said the vehicle drove over the deer and kept driving west on Rt. 54.The second vehicle was a 2007 Hyundai Tucson operated by Barbara J. Melius, 64, of Shermansdale, Pa. Police said she applied her brakes, drove over the deer and came to a stop.The third vehicle, a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Helen Endick, 48, of Mahanoy City, came to a stop at that point, but it was struck from behind by a 2011 Dodge Nitro operated by Colette M. Cinningham, 41, of Barnesville. Police said she applied her brakes but the vehicle struck the rear of the Blazer, with the force of the impact causing it to strike the rear of the Tucson.Police said all of the vehicle occupants were seat-belted.The Nitro was towed from the scene. Police said Cunningham will be cited as a result of the crash.The Ryan Township Fire Department assisted police at the scene.
