Jim Thorpe residents have spoken and current mayor Michael J. Sofranko will serve a second term in office.

Sofranko, when reached for comment via telephone this morning, thanked his constituents for their support and confidence in him."I am humbled," he said. "I'm thankful for the support the residents have shown me. It really means a lot."I can't say enough to all who came out and worked and helped with the election," he added.Sofranko said that he plans to continue what he started four years ago."We're going to work with the community through the Community Watch Program, continue to fight against illegal drugs that come into the area and work on maintaining the quality of life in Jim Thorpe," he said.He also commended the Jim Thorpe Police Department and Chief Joseph Schatz for the "great job" with reaching out to the community and becoming a strong presence.Sofranko also thanked his opponent Dennis McGinley Jr., for running a clean campaign."We spoke about the issues and I want to thank him for that," he said.Sofranko has been a driving force with becoming more community-minded since taking office four years ago.During his first term, he restructured the police department and had officers become reinvolved with the Carbon County Drug Task Force; organized the Community Watch Program; and joined state programs including Seat Belt Buckle U, the DUI Checkpoint Program and the Aggressive Driver Program.He also established a Police Service Contract that helps defray costs to borough taxpayers for events held in Jim Thorpe; as well as was instrumental in the formation of the Carbon County Mayors' Association.Sofranko is a lifelong resident of Jim Thorpe and is the husband of the former Therese Krebs. They have a son, Michael, and a daughter, Emily.
