Firefighters responded to a large brush fire Monday afternoon in Palmerton believed to have been set by a group of youths.

The Palmerton Fire Department arrived at an area behind Mauch Chunk Road at the railroad tracks at about 3:30 p.m., according to fire Chief Larry Zawaly.

"When we got there, it was a fairly large area," Zawaly said. "We had it knocked down within a couple of minutes."

Zawaly said foul play was suspected to be the cause of the brush fire.

"Supposedly, there were several young persons seen running from the area, and then the fire started," he said. "It got pretty large, and was headed toward two railroad tank cars."

One of the railroad tank cars contained anhydrous ammonia, Zawaly said.

Zawaly said there was some damage done to the grass, and several trees were burned. No injuries were reported.
