A traffic stop in McAdoo has led to drug related charges for a Beaver Meadows man.

Patrolman William Curilla was on routine patrol at 8:03 p.m. on Oct. 23, 2012, when he observed a white Dodge Stratus, without brake lights, traveling on Kennedy Drive. Curilla stopped the vehicle in the unit block of East Grant Street.

A strong odor of marijuana wafted from the vehicle's window when the officer went to speak with the driver, Hector Velez, 50, of 34 Broad St. Also in the Dodge were two minor children and a woman who Velez identified as his girlfriend.

Velez admitted smoking marijuana about 20 minutes earlier and noted there was a roach clip in the car.

The driver was placed under arrest and transported to Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, for blood tests. The tests were positive for THC, the active component in marijuana.

Velez was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of a controlled substance, DUI with a minor occupant, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to have working brake lights.
