Carbon County Fair is looking for young women to participate in the 2013 Queen Program and encourages those interested to meet 2012 Fair Queen Maura Kelly, from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7 or Sunday, May 5 at the train station in Jim Thorpe.
Interested candidates can meet Maura, ask questions and learn about her year as fair queen. Light refreshments will be served and applications for the contest will be available.
Maura is a senior at Weatherly Area High School and a member of the National Honor Society. She participated in County Band and plays the flute. She works at the recreation center.
She loves to dance and is a student and student instructor at Faberge Follies, Hazleton. After graduation, she would like to study meteorology and work for the Weather Channel.
Maura is the daughter of Pat and Kevin Kelly of Weatherly, and has a brother, Brett.
To participate in the fair queen contest, contestants must reside in Carbon County or West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, and be a female at least 14 years of age, but not over 17 years of age by Aug. 6, 2013. The queen program is not a beauty pageant and anyone meeting the criteria may apply.
Contestants will be judged on an essay, personal interview and speech presentation. Judges look for the candidate who will best represent the fair, while effectively promoting agriculture.

The 2013 queen will be crowned during the opening ceremony of the Carbon County Fair, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. In addition, a trophy and sash will be presented. At the completion of the queen's reign, a check from the fair will be presented to each of the finalists.
The Carbon County Fair will be held Aug. 6-10.
