The new meal provider for the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning will begin operations on Aug. 5.

In light of that, county commissioners on Thursday canceled contracts with companies that provided bread and milk to the prison.The contracts with Zimmerman's Dairy and Bimbo Bakeries USA will end as of Aug. 4.The county has hired Trinity Services Group, Inc., Oldsmar, Florida, to provide three years of meals to the prison for $843,776. now, the county handles the food service. commissioners have said that hiring trinity would save about $115,240 over each year of the contract.In other matters, commissioners approved a $301,599 right-of-way agreement with the state Department of Transportation for the $40 million Route 903 bridge project.The agreement allows PennDOT to lease 6.37 acres of land at the upper end of the county parking lot in Jim Thorpe to use as a staging area for the project.Commissioners have said the money will come in handy to repair damages to the lot caused by heavy construction equipment, and to offset the diminished parking availability during the project.The project, which will replace the bridge, which spans the Lehigh River and connects the two sections of Jim Thorpe, is expected to start next spring and finish in the summer of 2016.In other news, Commissioners Chairman Wayne Nothstein reminded senior citizens in the county that vouchers for fresh produce at farmers' markets are avilable at the Area Agency on Aging, Palmerton. Nothstein said that as of Thursday, there were 130 vouchers left. Those who want them should call the agency at (800) 441-1315 to make sure there are still some on hand. The vouchers must be picked up at the agency, which is at 401 Delaware Ave., Palmerton.Also, commissioners have canceled their regular public meeting for next week. The meeting would been on Thursday, July 4.
