A 15-year-old male student at Panther Valley High School has been charged with illegally collecting funds for the school's JROTC program.

Nesquehoning police said the teen, wearing a JROTC military uniform, solicited about $150 to $200 from residents of the New Columbus area of the borough.

The student told the residents that he was soliciting for donations to the program. He also advised residents that he was selling Gertrude Hawk candy. None of it was true.

Officer Timothy Wuttke, who filed the charges, was alerted to the situation by Ray Bresse, school disciplinarian.

Police said the teen made the collections during the time frame of February to May. Police ask anyone who might have had contact with the male and gave money to him, to call police at (570) 669-9111. One victim has been identified, but police feel there are more.
