Police responding to a call about a dying woman at 304 W. Bertsch St., Lansford, on June 6 arrested the woman's boyfriend on drug charges.

Eric Zuber, 31, 304 W. Bertsch St., faces four counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford and committed to Carbon County prison.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Officer Jeffrey Ohl, at 3:13 p.m. June 6, Ohl received a dispatch for an unresponsive female in the house. When he arrived, he found emergency medical technicians in an upstairs bedroom, trying to revive the unconscious woman. One of the technicians told Ohl that the woman had died.

According to official notices, Heather M. Hayes, 25, of 304 W. Bertsch St., Lansford, died Thursday, June 6, at her home. Authorities have not yet released a cause or manner of death.

According to the affidavit, Ohl spoke with Zuber, who was the woman's boyfriend, asking him what happened.

Zuber told Ohl that his girlfriend had overdosed on heroin and cold tablets. Ohl saw, in plain view in the bedroom two plastic containers holding suspected marijuana plants, several multicolored glass smoking pipes with burnt residue inside, bent metal paper clips, or "scrapers," commonly used to clean smoking pipes, and several packets of over-the-counter cold tablets.

Ohl also noticed, through an open door leading to another room, another suspected marijuana plant.

All of the items were seized, and Zuber was arrested.

During a pat-down, police found a black plastic "blunt wrap" with a white, powdery substance inside in the front pocket of Zuber's shorts.

Zuber openly admitted that he used the device to snort heroin.

He was taken to the borough police station.

There, Zuber was given his Miranda rights, which he waived, and agreed to talk with Ohl about what had happened.

Zuber provided a written statement, which said all of the drug paraphernalia and marijuana plants belonged to him and his now-deceased girlfriend.

A search warrant was prepared and executed on Zuber's house. An additional marijuana plant and numerous pieces of drug paraphernalia were discovered.
