Palmerton continues to debate whether it should allow 24-hour parking around the perimeter of its park.

Mayor Chris Olivia asked borough council on Thursday if the borough's public safety committee had an update on the situation.Borough manager Rodger Danielson told Olivia "the committee has been working on it and monitoring it."Council President Terry Costenbader said he doesn't believe the matter should be an issue any more."What I can't understand is there's still a problem," Costenbader said. "I'm not seeing a problem."Last month, council said it might consider an alteration to an ordinance that would allow for 24-hour parking around the perimeter of the park, and agreed to have the matter sent to the borough's public safety committee for review.Olivia stated at that time that there were five residents from the Palmer House along Delaware Avenue who have vehicles, but nowhere to park them due to the fact that the facility only has so much space.He then recommended at that time for council to consider a change to a borough ordinance that would allow people to park their vehicles on the east side of the park, from Delaware Avenue to Franklin Avenue, where 18 parking spaces are available.At present, parking is restricted there from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Danielson said.Olivia said that if the borough were to open up those parking spots, the seniors wouldn't have to move their vehicles, and could keep them parked there.Costenbader then stated, "I understand what you're trying to say and you're trying to do, but I don't see a problem."Olivia added "I just can't see where it hurts to make that full-time parking."Councilman Jeremy Barbosa said he believes that 24-hour parking should be allowed around the perimeter of the park.But Councilwoman Holly Sell said the situation would likely only add to the congestion problem that exists at a nearby elementary school.Costenbader said, "the committee should be looking at this very carefully."
