As anticipated the voter turnout for the special election of candidates for the Hazleton School Board, which was held in Schuylkill and Carbon counties yesterday, was not as great as the turnout was in the Primary Election held last May 21.
The total number of votes cast in Schuylkill County on the Republican ballot in the special election was 953, and 733 Democratic tallies. The candidates for school boards can cross file.
These votes, along with votes cast in Carbon County, are to be added to the votes cast in Luzerne County to determine the outcome. There was no election in Luzerne County because the mix-up occurred in Schuylkill and Carbon counties.
The Luzerne County Court ordered a re-election in the two counties after it was determined that a candidate that had withdrawn from the race was still on the ballot in the two counties. The error was caused by the Luzerne County election board, which failed to notify the other two counties that Steven Hahn withdrew as a candidate. He amassed about 500 votes.
Only the voters who voted for the school directors in the Primary Election were eligible to vote in the special election. There was concern expressed by some county officials of the Luzerne Count courts restrictions as some thought all registered voters in the five precincts should have been given the opportunity to vote in the special election.
The Schuylkill County results from the special election were as follows:
Republican ballot Carmella Yenkevich, 174 votes; Jared M. O'Donnell, 160; Clarence John, 157; James G. Chapman, 152; Bob Mehalick, 141; Thomas J. Chirico, 79; Frederick Mariano, 78. There were 12 write-ins.
