School students in the TIMES NEWS coverage area received a treat today in the form of a snow day as a storm system pushed through the region this morning.

But for everyone else, Monday morning began as yet another winter headache during rush hour travel.The wintry mix started in the form of light snow shortly before 6 a.m., when temperatures hovered in the mid 20s, and was expected to change over to sleet, freezing rain and rain throughout the late morning and afternoon hours.According to the National Weather Service, who issued a winter weather advisory for the region last night that will remain in effect until 5 a.m., Tuesday, snow accumulations could be near one inch in most areas before the changeover. An additional coating of .05 to .10 inches of ice is also possible before the storm pulls away tonight and temperatures rise to above freezing.As a precaution, all schools in Carbon County; as well as Tamaqua and Marian Catholic in Schuylkill County; Pleasant Valley in Monroe County; and Northwestern Lehigh and Northern Lehigh in Lehigh County shut their doors to classes early this morning.A brief warm up will occur Tuesday and Wednesday, as temperatures could reach and exceed 50 degrees.Tuesday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain or drizzle during the day and rain and patchy fog likely in the evening.On Wednesday, showers continue with wind gusts up to 28 mph.By Thursday, colder temperatures return with highs near 38 and a chance of rain and snow showers before noon, followed by a mostly sunny day.
