The Panther Valley girls qualified for the District 11 playoffs with a win over Weatherly on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Panther Vy.-Weatherly

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 17-point lead by halftime and breezed to a 69-29 win over the Lady Wreckers.

The win was PV's 11th of the season and qualified them for districts for the first time since 2003.

Abbey Whildin finished with 27 pointsand Madison Blasko added 22, including a career high six three-pointers. Sam Zlock addied 10.

Kelly Parker led Weatherly (5-11) with 10 points.

Weatherly did earn a split with a 50-24 win in the JV game. Alexis Hartz had 10 for the Wreckers, while Macy Markovich led Panther Valley with 12 points.

The Lady Miners dug deep to outscore Jim Thorpe in every frame for the 80-32 win.

The tandem of Reighly Melochick and Vanessa Whitecavage accounted for 50 points between the two as they managed to score 29 and 21 points, respectively. Both players nailed five three-pointers in the winning effort.

For the Lady Olympians, Rebecca Cressman scored a team-high nine points.

A slow start cursed the Lady Bulldogs as they failed to score in the first eight minutes, seeing a lead grow that proved to be too much to overcome, losing to the Eagles, 57-20.

Abby Fanelli's 13 points led all scorers for the winners, while teammate Caitria Bowen's 12 and 10 apiece from Joelle Moyer and Corinne Foster aided the cause.

A team-high seven points from Shannon Weil led the Northern Lehigh effort.

Blue Mountain also won the JV game, 43-12.

The Spartans used a fast start to down Marian in Schuylkill League boys' basketball action by a 64-36 score.

North Schuylkill jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter and then outscored the Colts by 15 in the third quarter to keep things in check. Drew Hughes led the way with 14 points, while Bill Stokes added 11, and Pat Walsh and Damon Meyer both chipped in 10.

North Schuylkill also won the JV contest, 50-46.

The Eagles improved their overall record to 13-3 on the season with a tough 42-41 non-league win over the Bulldogs.

Pete Harding converted on his second of two free throws with .2 seconds remaining to give Blue Mountain the win.

Kyle Slane led the Eagles with 16 points, while Harding managed 10.

Josh Eden led the way for the Bulldogs (11-6) with 12 points and Tyler Dibilio added 10.

Blue Mountain also won the JV game, 53-19.

Coal Cracker Round Robin Tournament

Panther Valley crowned three champions en route to a second place finish at the Coal Cracker Round Robin Tournament it hosted on Saturday.

Darren Goida (113), Richard Nase (195) and Rian Shubeck (285) won championships for the Panthers.

Catasauqua won the eight-team event, followed by Panther Valley.

Pen Argyl-Northwestern

The Green Knights utilized some timely wins and some forfeits to stun Northwestern in Colonial League wrestling action, 60-15.

The Tigers did manage to pick up individual wins from Mike Ortiz and Alex Russo, who earned pins, while teammate Quentin Bernhard fought for a tough overtime decision, 12-10.

Pleasant Vy.-New Oxford Tournament

The Bears used some strong individual showings in the New Oxford Tournament to finish respectfully at fifth place out of a competing 22 teams.

Pleasant Valley had one individual champion, as Kenny Yanovich swept through his weight class of 113 pounds.

Other noteworthy finishes were second place finishes from James Felipa at 120, Joell Toledo at 145 and Hunter Diehl at 195. Mike Benner finished third at the 285-pound weight, as well.

JR, HIGH BASKETBALL

9th GRADE

The Tamaqua Blue Raiders (7-9) defeated Lehighton 41-39.

Zac Coleman and Austin Zwolenik had 11 points each while Brendan Steigerwalt added 10 for Tamaqua. Nick Skrinkovsky had 15 points for Lehighton.

8TH GRADE

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville handed Tamaqua its first loss of the year, 41-32.

Thad Zuber and Josh Gordon led Tamaqua with 10 each and Eddie Titus followed with eight.

Tamaqua-Lehighton

Tamaqua rolled to a 33-10 win over Lehighton.

Eddie Titus paced Tamaqua (12-1) with 13 points. Bokan led Lehighton with six points.
