Bombers solidify D-11 berth

Palmerton head coach Dave Lavin and Northern Lehigh head coach Todd Herzog both new what each other planned to do during Saturday's Colonial League match.

Both knew that it all came down to who won the coin flip to choose who had choice in the odd or even bouts. The Bombers won the toss, chose even bouts, and went on to win 9 of the 14 matches en route to a 47-27 victory. The win solidified Palmerton's trip to the District 11 Class 2A Duals for the second straight year and dropped the Bulldogs, who lost a couple of matches during the year to impetigo, possibly searching for a match for early this week to try and help their chances of a berth."The toss went our way and I think Todd and I were on the same page onthat one," said Lavin afterwards. "We got the matchups that we wanted and they would have went the opposite way I'm sure."Our guys wrestled really well. We won all of those swing matches that we wanted and even in the losses I thought we looked good too."The (Joey) Bubble match was a big swing match. The way that we wrestled today was very good and the last couple of matches that we had, Northwestern and Bangor, I feel the same way. Even if those swing matches didn't go our way we would have been tough to beat because we wrestled tough."With the match starting at 106, Lavin made his first move forfeiting to Colton Rex and bumping up Brandon Traugher to 113 for a forfeit win to tie it at 6-6.Josh Evans followed with a technical fall over Matt Schmall at 120. After Ryan Rubio gave the Bulldogs a 12-11 lead with a pin at 136, the Bombers went on their run.A 20-second fall by Dillon Masington, a 10-5 decision by Zach Christman and the decision by Bubble, who held of Nate Farber gave Palmerton a 23-12 advantage. The Bulldogs' Ty Herzog and Bombers' Zach Graver matched falls and then Nolehi's Austin Arnold decisioned Matt Wolfe and Cody Bowman won by forfeit cutting Palmerton's lead to 28-27 with three bouts remaining.Jake Christman and Skyler Rosenberry added first period falls to the Bombers tally before teammate Andrew Strauss won by forfeit to close out the scoring."The coin toss was huge," said Herzog. "Dave knew every move I was going to make and I knew every move he was going to make. the matches at 38 and 45 were critical wins for them. I knew when we lost the toss we were in trouble and had to pull something out of our hat and then I knew they were going to be able to bump (Jake) Christman away from Bowman. There were so many strategical moves in there it was unbelievable. Dave's a good coach."Let's face it, it was a good win for them, they had the upper hand on us and we were kind of the underdog coming in here and we needed somve moves to work out for us and it didn't."Palmerton 47, No. Lehigh 27106 - Colton Rex (NL) won by forfeit113 - Brandon Traugher (P) won by forfeit120 - Josh Evans (P) tech. fall Matt Schmall, 19-5 (5:33)136 - Ryan Rubio (NL) pinned Damien Fink in 3:49132 - Dillon Masington (P) pinned William Andino in :20138 - Zach Christman (P) dec.
