Tigers' Shackelton earns top seed

The District 11 Class AA Swimming Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School with several local swimmers trying to earn a trip to states.

Only the winner of each event is guaranteed a spot into the PIAA Championships, which will take place March 13-14 at Bucknell Univeristy's Kinney Natatorium. An additional 16 individual spots and eight relay spots are earned based on the next fastest times from the rest of the district meets across the state.Northwestern sophomore Trey Shackelton figures to have the best chance to advance to Bucknell, earning the top seed in the 500 freestyle. His seed time of 4:54.9 is almost nine seconds faster than Salisbury's Tim Costantini.Shackelton will also be in medal contention in the 200 free, where he's seeded fourth. While he doesn't have a high school team, Shackelton figures to be comfortable in the water, as he's a member of the Parkland Acquatic Club which trains at the Trojans' home pool. The boys field also features Palmerton senior Sawyer Allen, the defending District 11 champion in the 100 breast. Allen is seeded fourth in the event this year and will also have to contend with Weatherly's Alex Sirkot, the fifth seed. Blue Mountain's Nathanael Marino, the top seed in the 100 breast, finished second to Allen by just over half a second last year.Allen will also be a medal threat in the 200 individual medley, an event he was fourth in last season. This year, he's seeded second behind Salisbury's Tim Costantini, who finished one spot in front of Allen in 2012.Tamaqua's Jake Kropp will also eye a trip to states in the 100 back, where he's seeded third. The girls' side features Allen's Palmerton teammate, senior Katie Pielmeier. Pielmeier's older brother Karl was twice golden last year, winning the 200 IM and 500 free. She'll try to match that medal haul, swimming the 200 IM and 100 breast against Southern Lehigh sisters Rhyan and Raechel Rodriguez, the top seeds and defending champions in both events, respectively.Pielmeier enters the meet with the second fastest seed time in the 200 IM and the third fastest in the 100 breast. She was second at districts and a state qualifier in both last season.Tamaqua's Joann Butkus, who took second in the 100 butterfly last year by 0.33 seconds, will look to improve on that this season when she swims the event as the third seed. Butkus is also slated to swim the 50 free - the event before the fly - where she's also seeded third. Butkus was a state qualifer in the 100 fly and 100 free last year.Fellow Blue Raider Caroline Kanaskie is seeded fifth in the 200 freestyle. Kanaskie set a school record en route to finishing eighth in the event at districts and earning a trip to states in 2012. She'll also swim the 100 back, where she's seeded sixth. Also competing on the girls' side are Tamaqua's Miranda Amey (fourth seed, 500 free) and Carly Trovinger (fifth seed, 100 breast) and Northern Lehigh's Scarlet Ojeda (fourth seed, 100 fly). The championships begin at 2:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon, with Saturday's session kicking off at 10 a.m.District 11 Class AA SwimmingMarch 1-2GIRLS200 medley relay - 1.
