Fillies rip Wreckers

Paul Brutto would like to see three of his Marian girls' basketball players score double digits in a game. It means his team is putting forth a balanced scoring effort.

Against Schuylkill League Division III counterpart Weatherly last night none of the Fillies got to double digits, but they did acheive a balanced effort in their 47-27 senior night win."We'd like to get three in doubles, but it didn't happen tonight," Brutto said. "We like to balance it out. It makes us tougher to guard. It gives them more to worry about, think about, prepare for."It was a good night in that sense that we had a bunch of people chip in scoring."Six Marian players scored more than five points and none scored more than nine.Emily Sofranko started the scoring for the Fillies with a jumper about a minute and a half into the game. After that, she was joined by Fillies' teammates Gabby Green, Sam Faust and Lindsay Nemeth to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter. Sofranko finished with two jumpers, while Nemeth hit two of her three three-pointers in the game in the opening quarter.Dom Adamczyk accounted for more than half of the Wreckers' seven by scoring four of her nine points on the night in the that quarter. In the second quarter, Savanna Krusinsky (four points), Abby Hill (three points) and Monica Baranko were the ones putting points on the scoreboard for the hosts. Sofranko was the lone other Fillie to score again in the second quarter, which saw the hosts enter the lockerrooms with a 25-11 lead at half.Weatherly coach PJ Hadzick found out first-hand that it was tough slow down the Fillies throughout the first half.In the second half, however, Hadzick saw a total of six different Fillies score. The Wrekcers' Erin Dougherty scored six of her nine points in the third quarter."We actually started with a triangle and two to play around, just to see what we could do with it," Hadzick said. "They just brought the next shooter, so it really didn't matter what we did."People who were trying to shut down Green and Faust, the others picked right up for them."The Wreckers' couldn't do anything against it in the third as the Fillies' took a 24-point lead into the final quarter. While Brutto substituted more throughout the fourth quarter, Hadzick saw three different players Alexis Boyarski, Dom Adamczyk and Dougherty hit three baskets to outscore the Fillies 8-4 in the fourth."They're kids always play hard," said Brutto, of the visiting Wreckers' "I think our press bothered them over the course of the game, especially the second half were I think we came out and did something a little better with our defense."What was good about the victory was that it was senior night, so it was a good way to send them (Sam Faust, Abby Hill) out that was the big thing we wanted to accomplish."WEATHERLYT.
