Changes to its secondary scheduling for the 2013-14 school year are under review in the Palmerton Area School District.
Paula Husar, junior high school principal, and Kathy Egan, high school principal, shared their master schedules with the school board at a workshop meeting on Tuesday.
Husar prefaced her presentation by stating "I feel very strongly that any change in schedule has to be something we all feel is going to work."
Goals Husar alluded to are to improve student test scores by using data to drive instructional practices; evaluate the master schedule to maximize the effectiveness of instruction; begin implementation of a Positive Behavior Support system to provide maximum classroom teaching time; and communicate more effectively.
Master schedule considerations Husar mentioned were a new bell schedule to support the period one class; to eliminate the current 25-minute homeroom period; and that there is a need for team planning.
Proposed changes include team planning periods; activity/advisory periods; music; response to instruction and intervention; and technology, as Husar noted there is zero technology at present.
Husar added she believes "now's the perfect opportunity to get a technology teacher."
As for the high school's master schedule, Egan said proposed changes would be to have equitable instructional time for each block; change the lunch schedule; continue with an enrichment program to provide supplemental instruction; reduce class size in math; and continue to share a music teacher.
