Police probe Monroe County hazing death

The death of a 19-year-old teen is being investigated by the PoconoMountain Regional police and the Monroe County district attorney's office.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, police were informed by officials at the Geisinger Wyoming Medical Center, Plains Township, that Chen "Michael" Deng, was brought to the facilityby friends earlier in the morning. Upon arrival Deng was found to be unresponsive and in critical condition.Police responded to the hospital and learned that Deng suffered injuries at a residence along Candlewood Drive, in Tunkhannock Township. Police were also told that Deng suffered major brain trauma and was placed on life support. He died Monday morning at the hospital.Through the course of the investigation police went to the Candlewood Drive address and found about 20 members of the Pi Delta Psi fraternity present. It was further learned that over 30 members of the fraternity traveled to the Poconos from New York City for the weekend. Deng was a student at Baruch College in Manhattan.In the early morning hours of Sunday, Deng, police determined, was one of four pledges to the fraternity, who was injured while participating in a ritual in the yard of the residence.After Deng suffered the traumatic injury he was brought inside the home and was unresponsive. He was then taken to the hospital by fraternity members.The investigation into the incident is continuing, police said.
