Jim Thorpe man celebrating 90 years

Alfred Max Feuerstein is celebrating his 90th birthday today. He was born Dec. 2, 1923 in East Mauch Chunk, son of Frederick and Mayme (Danner) Feuerstein. Alfred is the third generation of the Feuerstein family living primarily on the 400 block of South Street, East Mauch Chunk, now Jim Thorpe. His brother, Elmer, resides in Jim Thorpe, while his sister, Joan, lives in Lehighton. His eldest brother, Wilbur, who is deceased, lived in Hagerstown, Md.

Alfred was married to the late Melba Cecilia Kunkle, who was from Lehighton, for 64 years. They had two children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Daughter Kay Louise Murphy of Dover, Del. is married to John Murphy. Kay's children are Paula Hydro of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; James (deceased) and Brian Hydro of Jim Thorpe; and Darla Courtney of Dover. Son, Larry Alfred, resides in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. with his wife, Rosie Papay, formerly of Slatington, and son, Larry Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.Alfred was honored by the Mauch Chunk Trust Company as a Community Hero in 2013 for years of volunteer work. He is the oldest confirmed member of the United Church of Christ, Center Street, Jim Thorpe, and a member of numerous organizations, including Free Mason Lodge 242.He is a World War II Army veteran. He worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Conrail before retiring in 1980. Besides many years of wonderful family memories, Al can still recollect the excitement of his ride on the Switchback Railroad as a Cub Scout in 1932.
