'Fireball' levels house

A house on Little Gap Road in Lower Towamensing Township was destroyed early Sunday morning by a fast-moving fire, which melted power lines and the siding on three neighboring houses.

Aquashicola Fire Chief Bill George said firefighters were dispatched at 2:15 a.m. to a dwelling fire with flames showing. The house at 2385 Little Gap Road was engulfed in flames when they arrived on scene."It was a total ball of fire," George said. "There was nothing we could do except protect the neighboring houses."The home, owned by Scott Smith, collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived.All that's left is rubble on the ground.George said no one was in the house, which was reported to be in disrepair before the fire. George said the couple was having domestic problems and neither Smith nor his wife were staying at the house.Power was knocked out to several homes in the Lower Towamensing and Palmerton areas."As bad as it was, no firemen were injured," George said.Aquashicola firefighters remained on the scene until 6 a.m.Other companies responding included Palmerton, Towamensing, Bowmanstown, Kunkletown, Polk Township and Lehigh Township. Palmerton Ambulance was also called to the scene.Tankers were filled off site to transport water to the scene.George said the cause is undetermined at this time. The state police fire marshal is investigating.
