Palmerton school district reassigns principals

A realignment of several high school/junior high school administrators is about to take shape in the Palmerton Area School District.

By a unanimous measure, the school board on Tuesday approved a recommendation from Superintendent Scot Engler to reassign the following administrators:Kathy Egan, from principal of the high school, to assistant principal of the junior high/senior high schools, at the salary of $70,000.Paula Husar, to principal of the junior high/senior high schools, at the salary of $89,000.Richard DeSocio, to assistant principal of the junior high/senior high schools, at the salary of $68,889.All of the moves are scheduled to go into effect as of Thursday.Egan, who has been high school principal since 2000, was not in attendance.Husar had been principal of the junior high school since June 18, 2012, after she replaced former Principal Thaddeus Kosciolek, who retired after 35 years of service with the district."I'm very excited about the opportunity," Husar said. "It's a great school district, a great community, and I can't say enough about the kids and the staff."Husar praised Engler for his vision, and added "I'm doing what I love to do where I want to do it."When I became principal of the junior high, I said all of my decisions would be for the betterment of the kids, and I believe I've held true to that," she said. "It will still hold true at the high school level."DeSocio, who most recently served as Dean of Students for grades 7-12, had been a guidance counselor at the high school for the past seven years."I'm very happy for the opportunity to work with Mrs. Husar in the (grade) 7-12 complex," DeSocio said. "I'd like to thank the board and everyone for the opportunity."After the meeting, Engler told the TIMES NEWS, "The realignment best addresses our student needs.""The moves we've done are within our existing budget," Engler said. "There will be no additional monies paid out."In other business, the board:• Approved Tiffany Titus as a day-to-day substitute teacher.• Accepted the transfer of Kristen Heller from reading specialist at S.S. Palmer Elementary to reading specialist at Towamensing Elementary, effective Aug. 21, 2013, at her current salary of Master's, Step 6 ($49,353), pending contract negotiations.• Accepted the transfer of Kathryn Malay from reading specialist at S.S. Palmer Elementary to reading specialist at Towamensing Elementary, effective Aug. 21, 2013, at her current salary of Master's + 15, Step 8 ($52,831), pending contract negotiations.• Approved the resignation of Rose Mann, cafeteria worker, effective July 16, 2013.• Reassigned mentor teachers for the 2013-14 school year, due to the resignation of Angela Harris, as follows: Removed Jodi Kocher as mentor to Jennifer Esposito for the first semester; assigned Natalie Madeira as mentor to Esposito for the first semester.• Accepted the resignation of Stephanie Shiffert, Learning Support teacher at the high school, effective as soon as a replacement candidate is hired, and/or negotiated contract language.• Accepted the resignation of Shiffert as mentor teacher to Michael Brennan for the first semester of the 2013-14 school year.• Approved Zach Tofany as mentor teacher for Brennan for the first semester of the 2013-14 school year.• Accepted the gift of $562.24 from the Class of 2013 to the general fund to be used for the purchase of a park bench for the courtyard, retroactive to June 1, 2013.• Accepted the gift of $500 from the Estate of Elizabeth Jane Goplerud to set up for the Dorothy K. Sharp Memorial Scholarship Award Fund.• Accepted the Memoranda of Understanding between the Palmerton Area School District and both the Palmerton Police Department.• Accepted the handbooks for Palmerton Area Junior High School, Parkside Education Center, S.S. Palmer Elementary School, S.S. Palmer Grade 2, Towamensing Elementary, and Palmerton Area High School.• Accepted the first reading of Policy 916, School Volunteers.• Approved several tuition reimbursements.
