Nesquehoning police have charged a borough man with violating drug laws.

Taylor Wesley Schmitt, 23, of 64 W. Mill St., is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by chief Sean T. Smith:At 1:55 p.m. July 5, Schmitt, wearing only shorts, arrived at the police station from Carbon County Correctional facility, and asked Smith to escort him to his mother's house so he could get his belongings. Smith agreed, and met Schmitt at 64 W. Mill St. at 1:48 p.m. Smith knocked on the door, which was answered by Schmitt's mother, Jean Schmitt. She agreed that Smith and her son could come in to get his belongings.Officer Homanko arrived a few minutes later.Smith was standing in the living room talking with Jean Schmitt, who told him about a fight she and her son had, and that she no longer wanted him in her house. She asked about a protection-from-abuse order, and Smith told her how to get one.At that point, Taylor Schmitt came upstairs and asked where his iPhone was. Jean Schmitt said she didn't know. Smith noticed there were beer bottles, glass and other items smashed all over the kitchen. He asked if he could look around, and Jean Schmitt agreed.Smith walked into the kitchen, which opened from the living room, and saw, in plain sight, a multicolored glass bowl containing what appeared to be marijuana on a baker's rack.He seized the item, and asked Jean Schmitt if it was hers. She said it was not. Taylor Schmitt also denied ownership. In response to questions from Smith, Jean Schmitt said her son lives at the house and pays rent in the form of paying the electric and cell phone bills. She also said he "does drugs." Taylor Schmitt again denied that the bowl was his. Smith took the bowl back to the police station, where the substance was tested and found to be marijuana.
