A Carbon County driver is facing charges following an incident on Wednesday involving a stolen vehicle.

State police at Swiftwater identified the suspect as Jonathan Mallison, 32, of Albrightsville.

Troopers said a Pontiac Vibe, previously reported stolen, was spotted along SR33 north on Wednesday about 3:15 p.m. Police attempted to stop the vehicle by activating lights and siren.

The driver refused to stop and continued north on 33 and then onto Interstate 80 westbound. The driver of the Vibe then crossed the grassy median into the eastbound lanes of I80. A Stroud Regional police officer placed spike strips on the road in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle. However, the driver sped around the strips, almost hitting the officer.

The driver continued in the left lane onto the Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge where a New Jersey state police officer forced the vehicle into a concrete barrier.

At that point the driver stopped and was taken into custody. He was later identified as Mallison.

The investigation into the incident is continuing and charges are pending.
