A perfect game by Tamaqua's Brett Kosciolek highlighted Wednesday's scholastic sports action.

Weather played a factor in several games yesterday as a couple of contests were suspended and several others were shortened.

BASEBALL

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Sophomore Brett Kosciolek continued his stellar 2013 campaign, leading Tamaqua to a 5-0 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove in a game called after five innings because of the weather.

Kosciolek pitched a five inning perfect game, striking out three. He also did his job at the plate, hitting a three run homer in the first inning.

Troy Reinhardt also played well for the Raiders. getting a hit, an RBI, and scoring a run.

With the victory, the Raiders improved to 6-1 on the season and in the process surpassed their total wins from last season.

Palmerton-No. Lehigh

With large thunderstorm clouds over the mountain making things a little bit darker than usual, Palmerton and Northern Lehigh's Colonial League baseball game was suspended until a later date.

The Bombers and Bulldogs played to an 8-8 tie through six innings of play. With the score knotted at four, each team scored four runs in their half of the fifth inning to make for an interesting contest. Both teams then went in order in the sixth before the umpires suspended the game due to darkness.

Ryan Saylor and Jon Schwartz were both 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Palmerton. Saylor singled in runs in the first and the fifth, while Borger also had RBI-singles in the fourth and the fifth. Also recording RBIs for the Bombers were Nick Frey, Eli Borger and Austin Cook.

Northern Lehigh tied things up in the fifth thanks to five straight hits. Dan Dailey (3-for-3), Eli Oswald (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Ryan Martinez each had RBI-singles in the inning. Jake Marunich added a RBI fielder's choice. Matt Egan recorded the 'Dawgs only other RBI in the first.

A finishing date for the game has yet to be determined.

Marian-Weatherly

Rain suspended the Schuylkill League game between Marian and Weatherly with the Colts leading 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game will be completed from the point of interruption at a date to be determined

Nick Kwedar was having a strong game on the mound for the Colts, striking out seven in four innings of work. Marian scored all its runs in the second inning as Peter Baddick, Eric Swankoski, Justin Bilka and Kweder all delivered hits.

Rob Hinkle doubled home brother Kevin Hinkle with Weatherly's only run.

Catasauqua-Northwestern

Northwestern edged Catasauqua, 2-1, in a rain-shortened Colonial League game.

Richard Perry had a big game for the Tigers (6-2, 3-2). Perry was the winning pitcher, scattering seven hits. At the plate, Perry had a single, a double, and scored a run.

Also playing well for Northwestern were, Nick Rodriguez (two hits, two stolen bases, run scored) and Collin Breidinger (double, RBI).

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Pottsvile handled Jim Thorpe (1-7, 0-4) 16-7 for the Schuylkill League division 1 victory.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-No. Lehigh

Amber Kibler belted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Northern Lehigh to a 3-2 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Kibler also had an RBI during a two-run first-inning for the Bulldogs (3-5, 1-4). Taylor Herman added two hits and scored a run for Northern Lehigh.

For Palmerton (4-3, 2-3), Janel Tracy had two hits, including a two-run first inning home run. Sammie Doherty added a single, a double and scored a run.

The Bulldogs' Amber Thomas struck out six and earned the pitching victory. Kendra Pekurny fanned eight in a losing effort.

Panther Valley got its first win of the season, downing Pocono Mountain West, 16-1, in a non-league game.

The Panthers scored 11 runs in the third inning en-route to the blowout victory.

Three PV hitters had big days at the plate. Sam Snyder and Nicole Matson both had three hits and three RBIs. Hanna Hill added two hits and three RBIs.

Panther Valley pitcher Sam Zlock was solid as well, going the distance and allowing just one run on five hits.

Ethel Mae Santai had a huge day to help Pine Grove roll to a 13-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua in a game stopped in the top of the sixth inning by rain..

Santai tossed a five-inning no-hitter, which included 11 strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, she had a single, double and two RBIs. Morgan Woelf also played well for the Cardinals with a single, home run and three RBIs.

Carly Sassaman accounted for the Blue Raiders' lone run with a fielders' choice RBI.

Catasauqua-Northwestern

Mother Nature interfered in Northwestern's seventh inning rally as the game was called with two outs and bases loaded in the final inning. As a result, Catasauqua walked off the field with a 7-6 Colonial League win over the hosts.

Sonny Greenberg led the Tigers with three singles, two RBIs and a run scored. Kylee Bennett added two singles and two runs scored.

Northwestern slips to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the CL.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Pottsville exploded for nine first-inning runs and went on to rout Jim Thorpe, 15-0, in a Schuylkill League mercy-rule game.

Pottsville pitcher Julie Buliko tossed a three-inning no-hitter. Buliko and Nikki Garland both had three RBIs for the Crimson Tide.

Jim Thorpe falls to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Crestwood-Jim Thorpe

Crestwood swept in doubles and took one out of two in singles action to earn a non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.

The No. 1 singles match between Thorpe's Kyle Bacher and Briley Marchetti was rained out and did not continue.

The lone Thorpe win on the day came at No. 3 singles where Lou Squillace defeated Ricky Poofary, 6-0, 6-0.
