Police department commended

Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko, and Police Chief, Joseph Schatz, updated council on what the police department has been working on.

Mayor Sofranko and council members commended the department on their work on a drug bust that happened in March.Chief Schatz also wanted to thank the department for all their work on the drug bust.Chief Schatz spoke with council about the relationship between the police department and the Jim Thorpe School District. He stated that he and the department have met with the district for a security summit and the department has also worked with the school district in active shooter trainings.Chief Schatz will be looking into and conducting research on Resource Officers for the school district.He also stated the department will be taking part in an Aggressive Driving Campaign.Council member, Joanne Klitsch wished to thank the department for their work on the drug bust. She stated that a lot of heroine had been taken off the streets.Klitsch also talked about the Community Watch group in JT and how it's a great way to stay informed. She encourages the community to attend the meetings.Council member, John McGuire, also wished to thank the police department for their hard work.In other news, council approved the following:- The Jim Thorpe Chamber of Commerce annual run on May 18th 10:30- 12noon.- Day's Landscaping and Storage to remove the trees by the Germantown Plant at a cost of $1,050.- Cindy Kmetz to make adjustments to the sewer bills for people that are filling their swimming pools. To be done around the beginning of spring.- Louise McClafferty, Borough Secretary, and Betsy Ahner, Council President, to attend a Healthcare seminar on May 8th.- The Diligent Volunteer Fire Departments officers list for 2013- The 2012 CDBG funds to be used on the following: $60,000 on the Penn Vest Water Project loan payment and $10,348 towards the HVAC project for Memorial Park Hall.- Awarding the chemicals bids for the Water and Sewer Plants to:Carusol TM-20 Sodium Permanganate to Main Pool Chemical for $563.75.Chemical Lime to Northeast Chemical for $6.77.Dense Soda Ash to Main Pool Chemical for $11.99.Liquid Chlorine to Univar for $107.Calciquest 50-50 blend to Univar for $288.Ferric Chloride Solution 40% to Main Pool Chemical for $16.40.Sternpac to Main Pool Chemical for $158.95.Sodium Hype Chlorite Solution 15% CL/VOL to Main Pool Chemical for $84.70.Magnesium Hydroxide Wet 60% to Main Pool Chemical for $673.75.In other news:Council approved the resolution and grant agreement allowing the Delaware & Lehigh Corridor to apply for the grant for the connection from the pedestrian bridge by the sewer plant.The pedestrian bridge is a project of the county. The borough would be the applicant for the grant for the connection from the pedestrian bridge to the foot path. Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission will be maintaining this section.Also, Council is still seeking someone to fill the Chairman of Vacancy Board position."If there is a resignation on borough council and they can't fill the position within 30 days either because they don't or because there is a tie, the vacancy board person calls a meeting of the vacancy board. The vacancy board consists of the vacancy board person and the other council members. Then the vacancy board person asks for nominations and at that point you can appoint someone or vote," stated Curtis Jackson, former Vacancy Board Chairperson.If someone has resigned from council, the vacancy board chair can break a tie vote if council cannot establish someone within 30 days.The person on the vacancy board cannot serve on any other board or committee in the borough.The vacancy board can fill any elected or appointed position.
