Parents of the JROTC members are invited to attend the first meeting of the season in the high school classroom. This will be nomination of officers starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9.Tax officeThe tax office of Patricia Vito will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 10 and will reopen on Friday.Golden agersThe bi-monthly meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers was held on Aug. 24 at St. Joseph Hall. A prayer opened the meeting followed by a Pledge of Allegiance. Members are reminded of the Journey of Hope trip, sponsored by the Allentown Diocese. Anyone attending must register.The next meeting will be held on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Hall, Summit Hill. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join the organization. The hall is handicapped accessible. Cards, games, and bingo are available to be played.Healing ministryThe Healing Ministry of St. Francis of Assisi extends a personal invitation to you and anyone in your family struggling with the grief process in the loss of a loved one recently, or a loss of many years. The invitation is open to anyone in the community and surrounding area.The Fall Session Bereavement Group will begin meeting on Monday, Sept. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the parish hall. Sessions will continue for six to eight weeks and are strictly confidential.To register, call Valerie Higgins at 668-2386 or the rectory at 669-6321.Navy ClubThe newly formed Navy Club will hold its installation of officers ceremony at 7 p.m., in the downstairs banquet room of AMVETS Post 83 in Lansford. All members are invited to attend.Henry Desrosiers, directors of the Carbon County Department of Veterans Affairs, will be in attendance.Membership into the new club is open to all active duty, reserve, and honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.For more information, call Robert Siesputowski at (570) 645-3643.Summit HillPreschool openingsThe Little Angels Pre-School, now a division of Our Lady of the Angels Academy, Lansford, has openings in the programs for the 2009-2010 school year. There is a two-day program for 3- and 4-year-olds, and a three-day program for 4- and 5-year-olds. Also offered is a full-day program for the three-day class.Parents interested in registering their child(ren) can do so by calling Stephanie Alexander at (570) 645-5878.Presbyterian churchThe Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, formerly the First Presbyterian Church of the Panther Valley, Summit Hill, will hold its picnic/service at Mauch Chunk Lake Park on Sunday, Sept. 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m.Regular worship services will resume on Sunday, Sept. 20, as follows: Sunday school and adult Bible study, 9 a.m.; and worship service, 10:30 a.m. Communion will be celebrated on the first Sunday of each month.Food distributionThe Summit Hill Food Pantry conducts a monthly distribution of food boxes to the needy in the community. Anyone in need of the assistance, or knowing of individuals or families who do, is asked to contact Rose Marie Armon, (570) 645-3604, or Emma Weaver, 645-7348.The pantry, a non-denominational entity, is always in need of donations and manual assistance. To donate items or your time, contact the above persons as well.The Summit Hill Lions Club has taken on the task of assisting the pantry with its distributions as a service project. Boxes are usually packed on a Thursday (Sept. 17), beginning at 9 a.m., and are distributed on the fourth Tuesday (Sept. 22), starting at 9 a.m. The Second Harvest truck delivery of commodities (which needs to be unloaded) usually takes place on the last Thursday of the month (Sept. 24). Lions Club members are reminded of these upcoming dates and can contact President Kenneth Vermillion for additional information on helping with the duties.Legion to meetThe monthly meeting of American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the post home. Commander W. Kevin O'Donnell will be in charge of the session.A meeting of the Home Association will immediately follow the post's meeting.CCD classesThe first CCD class of the new academic school year for students of St. Joseph Catholic Church who attend Panther Valley schools will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 9 a.m. Registration dates are Sunday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Church hall and Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon in St. Katharine Drexel Hall, Lansford.
