Police conduct checkpoints

Police were busy over the Labor Day weekend with checkpoints and roving patrols.

On Aug. 31, officers from Bangor, Nazareth, Stockertown, Tatamy, and Walnutport boroughs; Bushkill, Lehigh, and Moore and Upper Nazareth townships, and Colonial Regional and state police participated in a sobriety checkpoint at Lehigh Drive (Route 248) and Route 873 in Lehigh Township.The Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company helped with traffic control and lighting.Police contacted 967 vehicles, arresting three people for driving under the influence of alcohol; three for driving under the influence of drugs; made two drug arrests, and one arrest for driving under suspension/DUI-related while driving under the influence.Police also issued 14 traffic citations and eight warnings.On Sept. 1, officers from Bangor, Nazareth, Stockertown, Tatamy, Pen Argyl and Walnutport boroughs; Bushkill, Plainfield, Lehigh, Upper Nazareth, and Moore townships, and Colonial Regional participated in a sobriety checkpoint in the 300 block of South 1st Street (Route 191) in Bangor Borough.They contacted 563 vehicles, arresting five for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police also issued 16 traffic citations and 19 warnings.Also on Sept. 1, officers from Nazareth, Stockertown, and Tatamy boroughs; and Upper Nazareth Township participated in a roving DUI patrol. Police contacted 28 drivers, arresting one for driving under the influence of alcohol. They also issued seven traffic citations and 22 warnings.
