Nevin Smith, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated his 91st birthday recently. He was born on Oct. 9, 1921.

Nevin, a retired World War II veteran, was drafted into the U.S. Army a week shy of his 21st birthday. He served in the 151st Infantry, Company G, as a rifleman from 1942-45. He was wounded twice in the line of duty and was discharged with a Purple Heart. After the war he gained employment at Atlas Cement Company in Northampton, where he worked for 30 years prior to retirement. He also married his childhood sweetheart shortly thereafter. When asked how he met his wife Verna, Nevin jokingly says they "used to run around together as kids, until I finally caught her."Together they raised eight children.Nevin enjoys music and chatting with others, but is happiest when traveling out on the lunch trips sponsored by The Village and with family members. He is a proud member of VFW Post #899 in Walnutport where he often socialized, and he enjoys many visits from his girl, Dorothy, his children and grandchildren.
