Police arrest suspected armed robber

Tamaqua Police were quick to investigate and arrest a suspected armed robber who held a knife to another man's neck during a robbery late Friday night in front of Freddy's Pub in Tamaqua. Roosevelt Warden, 44, of 400 Pine St., Tamaqua, was taken into custody yesterday.

Just after 11 p.m. Friday night, Tamaqua Patrolman Thomas Duarte was dispatched to Freddy's Pub, 16 Mauch Chunk St., for a robbery that had just occurred.Upon arrival, Duarte reportedly spoke to Andrew Darrohn, 24, who told him that he had been robbed at knife point by a large African American male. Darrohn stated that the man had approached him while he was standing on the sidewalk outside of Freddy's Pub. Darrohn added that the man asked him if he had change for a 20 dollar bill. Darrohn, who was on a cell phone at the time, ended his call. That is when Warden allegedly pulled out a knife, grabbed him, pressed the knife to the back of his neck and demanded Darrohn give him his wallet and cell phone. Darrohn stated he gave up his wallet and cell phone after being taken to the ground with the knife to his neck.An employee at Freddy's Pub told police that she was sitting by the door of the bar and was looking out the door where Darrohn was standing. She stated she saw the suspect engage Darrohn. She told another person in the bar to keep an eye on what was going on outside. She stated that is when the other witness called for her help and they both went outside. Once outside, she said that she saw an African-American male, known to her as "Dante," holding Darrohn down on the ground alongside a parked truck with a knife held to the back of his neck.Reportedly, the witness then yelled at Warden, stating that she knows who he is, since Warden had been banned from the bar. After a few more words, Warden reportedly fled the area.Officer Duarte knew "Dante" as Warden from previous police encounters.Tamaqua Patrolman Michael Hobbs did a review of the security video from a safety camera facing Freddy's Pub, which captured the incident, while Cpl. Henry Woods conducted interviews of the witnesses.Warden is being charged with recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, unlawful restraint, receiving stolen property, theft by unlawful taking and three felony counts of robbery.Unable to post $50,000 straight bail, Warden is currently locked up in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville.Police Chief Dave Mattson expressed his appreciation to Corporal Henry Woods, criminal investigator, and all the other officers for their quick work during the investigation and arrest.
