A vacant seat exists on Palmerton Borough Council after a move to select a former councilman as mayor led to a chain reaction.

The post opened after council on Thursday selected Chris Olivia, who had served as Vice President of council, as the town's new mayor. Afterward, Olivia resigned his seat on council.

Borough Manager Rodger Danielson then announced that interested candidates who would like to fill the seat should submit a short letter of interest to the borough by Oct. 19.

Danielson said council would then look to appoint a new member of council when it meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 25.

Whomever is chosen will fill the remainder of Olivia's term, which expires Dec. 31, 2013.
