Boy Scout Troop 82 and Cub Pack 82 and 145, which meets at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lehighton; along with Troop 187 and Pack 187, which meets at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Lehighton, recently took part in the Scouting for Food project, which culminated in the collection of 3,543 pounds of food donated to Trinity Pantry, Third Street, Lehighton.
The Scouting for Food project was coordinated by Judy Wingert, food coordinator of Boy Scout Troop 82. Wingert organizes and keeps a record of the collections.
The Lehighton food pantry serves 450 households every month in the Lehighton area.
"The scouts have a system for the collection of food," said Wingert. "The Scouts drive up to the dock area, where Boy Scout Troop 82 meets them to form a human chain handing the bags to the weighing and sorting area to the volunteers from the food pantry."
Wingert said that the Scouting for Food Project is a two-week process that is a nationwide event.
The week before collection Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts distributed door hangers and then the next week Scouts revisited the homes to pick up the filled bags to be weighed and sorted and then given to the volunteers from the pantry
