Drug dealer gets long state prison sentence

A Lehigh County man, convicted by a Carbon County jury of drug dealing, was sentenced Monday to a long state prison term.

Drew Ali Muslim, 28, whose last known address was Allentown, was sentenced by Presidet Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve a total of 28 to 84 months in a state prison.Muslim was arrested on June 29, 2011, when state police from the Lehighton barracks went to a residence at 86 Mountain View Drive, in Penn Forest Township, to serve a warrant for a wanted person. Muslim was that wanted person. When troopers entered the home they found a large amount of crack cocaine. Also arrested at the time was Muslim's sister, Wakeelah Jasmine Muslim, 27, of Allentown. At the time the two were taken into custody, following a brief stand-off, Drew Muslim had eaten an unknown amount of crack cocaine in an alleged effort to conceal his activities while being taken into custody. He was taken to the Lehighton hospital and admitted for a period of time.He went on trial on Sept. 11. Following a day of testimony the jury panel, which deliberated for about an hour, found him guilty of one count each of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-cocaine, possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was found not guilty of criminal conspiracy to possess a controlled substance.Yesterday Muslim said little at the proceeding. He only asked that Nanovic impose a shorter maximum sentence than the 84 months, which was denied.Muslim is currently serving a state prison term for violation of his state parole. At the time he was arrested in Carbon he was on state parole for drug and related counts.Defense Attorney Michael Gough said Muslim plans to appeal his conviction of the drug charges.Nanovic also ordered Muslim to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a D&A sample and pay the $250 fee, pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and was given credit for 230 days spent in jail on the charge.Nanovic also ordered the sentence run consecutive to any sentence Muslim is currently serving.
