Weatherly woman celebrates 99th birthday

Lois Evelyn (Sands) Holman, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 99th birthday. She was born in Hazleton on Nov. 1, 1913.

Lois was married to Allan Williams for 47 years, until his death in 1979. She was married to David Holman for 10 years, until his passing in 2000.She is a member of the Hazleton Chapter of the American Red Cross and received recognition for more than 50 years of service.Lois was instrumental in starting the Red Cross Bloodmobile in Weatherly. She was also a volunteer worker in the Hazleton Red Cross office during World War II.Lois is a member of flower clubs in Hazleton and Weatherly, where she held several offices, including president.She is a member of the Weatherly Presbyterian Church, served as a church elder and was treasurer of the Presbyterian Women's Organization. She also received honorary membership from the Board of National Missions.A member of the Weatherly Alumni Association, she has received awards of appreciation for the services to her community from the Weatherly Lions Club and the Weatherly American Legion.Lois is a member of the Weatherly Senior Citizens Club, the Order of the Eastern Star and is past president of the Knights Templar Auxiliary.Over the years her hobbies have included gardening, bird watching, baking cookies, working crossword puzzles, reading and playing cards.
