A handful of candidates have applied to fill a vacant seat on Palmerton Borough Council.
Five applications were received by the borough as of 3 p.m. Friday, according to borough Manager Rodger Danielson.
Danielson said he was pleased with the level of interest expressed in the open seat.
"It's nice, considering that in the last election, people ran unopposed," Danielson said. "There was some interest here."
Danielson said the individuals who applied were Phil Binder, Gerald Robertson, Jereme Barkanic, Michael Ballard, and Holly Sell.
Borough council meets at 7 p.m. May 24, at which time an appointment could be made.
The seat opened after former Councilman Randolph Gursky resigned because he bought a business and moved to Florida.
As a result, council agreed last month to accept Gursky's resignation.
Whomever is chosen to fill the post will serve the remainder of Gursky's term, which expires in December of 2013.
Gursky had served on council since 2004. After he lost out on his bid for re-election in November of 2009, Gursky was appointed the next month to fill a seat that became vacant when former Councilman Brad Doll resigned after being elected mayor.
