The Tamaqua Area High School Media Club is sponsoring the Seventh Annual TAHS Independent Film Festival and Art Show, scheduled to be held this Friday. Hosts for the event will include Andrea Whitley, Allie Miller, Keith Kranch and Chris Hartung. Formal wear is encouraged as the students are hoping for a "film premier vibe."
Doors to the district's auditorium, located between the senior high and middle schools, will open at 6:30 p.m.
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met May 10 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 78 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Blessing of the Senses." Vice President Nancy Gerber, secretary Joan Anne Garber and treasurer Antoinette Triano provided their reports. Joan Brown and Jean Homyak were added to the sick list.
Hot dogs, sauerkraut and mini cream puffs were served.
The meeting concluded with cards and social games.
The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.
The Tamaqua Blue Waves Swim Team will be accepting registrations for the 2012 season this Friday, May 18. Sign ups will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Tamaqua Senior High School Pool. The team is open to anyone age 6 through high school.
To be eligible, swimmers must be able to complete one lap at the school pool. New participants will be given a skills test to determine their ability and competition category.
South Ward meeting
The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet Thursday, at 7 p.m., in the South Ward Community Center. The public is welcome to attend.
SS. Peter and Paul
Ascension Thursday will be observed this week in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Masses will be celebrated Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Thursday, at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. This is a holy day of obligation.
Parents of parish confirmands, students in grades six and seven, are reminded there will be a meeting, on May 20, at noon, in St. Jerome's Catholic Church. Confirmation will be celebrated in 2013.
St. Peter's Union
The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m. and Confirmation class meets at 11:30 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the Cub Scout egg drop will be held at 4:30 p.m. Daisies and Brownies will meet at 6 p.m., youth group and Cub Scout committee will meet at 6 p.m.
Activities for next week will include: Wednesday, preschool graduation at 7 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m.
The choirs rehearse on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: junior choir at 7 p.m., senior choir at 7:30 p.m.
