Lehighton Downtown Initiative Committee members have been working hard the last few months to bring some great events to Lehighton.

The first event will be Lehighton Community Days to be held at the Lehighton Community Grove on Friday, May 18, from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Highlights includes rides by Metz Carnival Rides and entertainment on Friday night by the Senile Delinquents and the Lehighton Juggle Club. There will also be bingo offered by Lehighton Pool Pals from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Lehighton Rec Center. There will be all night ride passes available.

Saturday events will begin with a yard sale/craft show/home party vendors/business expo. There are a limited amount of tables available. After that, people will have to bring their own tables. There will be a spill over area available for vendors in the parking lot after the indoor spaces are gone. For more information about table spaces, contact Karen at (610) 554-9241.

Jukebox Cruisers will be showing off some shiny metal cars and a DJ will be offering music from 1 to 4 p.m.

The young and talented A.D.D. rock band will be offering live music from 5 to 8 p.m.

The day will be capped off with an old fashioned cake walk from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday that will benefit the Trinity Food Pantry.

There will be plenty of food vendors and everyone is invited to join the fun, spend time with neighbors and friends and enjoy the outdoor event. For information about

Also on Saturday will be the Lehighton Amazing Race, which will begin at 9 a.m. at the Lehighton Bandshell in the upper park in downtown Lehighton. LDIC is looking for teams of two to compete in this mildly physical and mental competition. The course will be a minimum of four to five miles in length with several stops along the way. Each stop will give a clue to your next position. A couple of the stations have minor physical and mental challenges that one of the members must complete. Each couple must pay a registration fee to compete. All proceeds will benefit LDIC. To register, or for more information, email Todd Zimmerman at toddpzimmerman@yahoo.com [1] or call 570-778-2384.

Organizer Todd Zimmerman has a few very good surprises and prizes for everyone. Top prize is $1,000, second place is $250 and third place is $100. Volunteers are needed to make this event grow.

The committee will also unveil the Lehighton Civic Challenge at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, when residents are encouraged to adopt a flower plot in the downtown park.

LDIC is also planning 2012 Lehighton Bike Night. It will be begin at noon on Saturday, Aug. 13 in the downtown parks and Second Street in Lehighton. Vendors are welcome and should call 484-464-3805 for additional information. The event will include a Poker Run, Bike Show, vendors, good food and live music. Thousands of riders come to the event each year. There will be special pins and t-shirts available to commemorate the event.

Lehighton Downtown Initiative Committee (LDIC) was formed in the summer of 2007 with its goal to revitalize the downtown Lehighton business district and other areas within the borough. The group encourages business owners, civic organizations, and the people of Lehighton to help them in this endeavor. Proceeds raised through fundraising will be spent on capital improvements and community events within the borough of Lehighton.

Their first goal is to spruce up the area parks. To date, they have an engraved brick paver fundraiser to refurbish the walkways and an adopt-a-flower-garden program to make the parks more inviting. Individuals and businesses could help by furnishing supplies or manpower to support these efforts.

LDIC is planned to place security cameras in parks which will be hooked into the borough building to make everyone, especially the elderly feel more secure. The cameras will be under surveillance and have the capability to be viewed on a public website.
