A hit and run accident which caused two other crashes involved area residents. State police at Fogelsville said the incident began about 1:26 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, along SR309 at Mountain Road, in Lynn Township, Lehigh County.
Troopers said a Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound when it crossed the southbound lane and went onto the berm where it struck a utility pole. The driver then fled the scene leaving the disabled Corolla behind. The Corolla sustained heavy front end damage.
Later a 2000 Peterbuilt truck, operated by Carmen Veneziale, of Quakertown, was northbound and came upon the crash scene. The front top portion of the truck struck wires hanging over 309 from the pole that was struck in the hit and run.
Impact with the wires caused the upper portion of the utility pole to break from the bottom half of the pole. The upper half of the pole fell onto the northbound lane with power lines also crossing over multiple lanes.
At this point Michael Follweiler, of New Ringgold, driving a 2001 Nissan Altima, was northbound and came upon the scene. The front of his car impacted with the upper portion of the pole causing disabling damages to the Nissan.
Veneziale and Follweiler were not injured. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. The traffic was detoured for about two hours until the road could be cleared, troopers said.
Troopers said the Corolla is registered to Frankie Krell of Tamaqua. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call troopers at 610-395-1438.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from fire companies from New Tripoli, Germansville and West Penn Township.
