Palmerton Area Service Club seeking new members

A Palmerton organization that promotes community welfare and goodwill is in search of more members.

The Palmerton Area Service Club, formerly the Palmerton Exchange Club, was incorporated in March of 2012 and has about 20 members. However, its membership has dwindled down over time, which has prompted it to seek new members, according to Anna Strohl, president of the organization.Strohl said the group's purpose is "to take an active interest in the health, welfare, and general well-being of our community by supporting other nonprofit community organizations, and by providing educational scholarships and recognition to worthy students."The group meets the third Tuesday of each month at Bert's Steakhouse & Restaurant, 416 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, and features presentations from guest speakers. In the month of March, the organization honors its Youth of the Month, and in May, it recognizes the Top Ten Percent of the Palmerton Area High School Senior Class. It also sponsors or contributes to the Easter Egg Hunt in the Palmerton Borough Park, the Halloween Parade, Concerts in the Park, and presents five needy families with gift certificates around Christmas time.Strohl said the organization will soon begin to prepare for this year's West End Fair, which will be held Aug. 26 through Sept. 1 at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert. She said the group sets up a stand each year at the fair "to raise our money for all our support to other organizations and students."Strohl said volunteers who would like to assist the organization at the fair are welcome.Anyone with an interest in joining, or those who would like to contribute to the organization, may contact Strohl at (610) 826-5220.
