State police at Frackville reported investigating a tractor-trailer crash about 1:11 p.m. on Friday, June 1, along SR61 in Blythe Township, Schuylkill County.

Troopers said Richard L. Heffner, 25, of Lake Ariel, Wayne County, was operating a 2006 International Harvester with trailer southbound and approaching a tight right curve. Heffner applied the brakes and attempted to slow down.

The load of the trailer began to shift to the left unbalancing the trailer. The rig then jack-knifed and slid slightly clockwise. The tractor and trailer then rolled onto the left side, slid across the left southbound lane, and hit the guiderail. The rig then slid south in the left southbound lane about 45-feet.

Heffner had to be extricated from the wreckage by rescue personnel and was taken by Medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment of what troopers called moderate to major injuries.

Both southbound lanes were closed for about two hours. Troopers said Heffner will be cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.

Troopers also probed a crash about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 3, along Highridge Road, in Cass Township. Troopers said Michael Sterner, 32, of Gordon, was driving a 2003 Nissan Sentra northbound when he drove off the east side of the road. The car struck a metal guard rail with the front end, then continued north about 15-feet before spinning clockwise, and coming to rest partially on the road.

Sterner then fled the scene but was later located. He is facing multiple motor vehicle code citations, troopers said.
