It will cost Palmerton Area School District nearly $69,000 to replace the front doors at its high school.
The school board, on an 8-0 vote at a special meeting on Tuesday, approved a contract with Simplex at a cost of $68,906. Director Charles Gildner was absent.
Also on Tuesday at a workshop session held prior to the special meeting, the board discussed several options to replace the current junior high school/senior high school sign.
Joseph Faenza, director of facilities, presented the board with three price options. Afterward, the consensus of the board was for the district to spend $29,800 to replace the sign, though no actual vote was taken on the matter.
Superintendent Carol Boyce noted that the district has leftover money from previous investments or construction accounts, whose sole purpose is for capital or equipment purchases, and not for use in the general operating budget.
Boyce said there is $10,241 in the construction account; $26,000 in the capital reserve account; and $40,094 in the general fund account.
"Everybody is certainly concerned with the visibility," Boyce said. "Whichever design you choose, you do have existing money that now could pay for it without affecting the bond issue."
Director Sherry Haas said she believes the sign should recognize not only the high school, but also the adjoining junior high school as well.
