Saukis, Georgis win Two Saints Scamper

Ed Saukis and Lisa Georgis were the top overall finishers in the 13th annual Two Saints Scamper held in Summit Hill on July 14. The event, sponsored by St. Joseph's Church of Summit Hill, was a prelude to the annual St. Joseph's Festival held over the weekend.

There were a total of over 40 participants in this year's scamper, which is a 5k (3.1 mile) running and walking race."I do it for fun and to meet people," said John Gallagher, age 76, who has participated in this race since it first started. "I once ran against Wilt Chamberlain (a famous 7 foot 1 inch tall American basketball player) during a race in Walnutport in the 1950's.""I like to run," said Tia Ketchledge, 12, of Summit Hill. "I've also participate in the Zoostock run every year.""Running is an addiction," said Lisa Georgis, 43, of New Ringgold. Georgis, who has been running for over ten years, added "It helps that the race runs past my late Nanna's house on Holland Street."Also on hand during the race was Anthony Powell, 20, who placed first last year. Powell was wearing a ankle brace for a sprained ankle.Taking first place in the 40-44 age group, Jeremy Dormer, 40, Cross Country and Track Couch for Marian High School and Marine Corps veteran, recalled running in the Marine Corps Marathon twice."I've been running over 10 years," said Ed Saukis, 23, from St. Clair, as he recalled many more races that were held in Summit Hill. "It feels great to support local charities."One of the entries was Bobby O'Gurek of Summit Hill, who completed the course in a motorized wheel chair.Chairing the event were Nathan and Christen Halenar. Rich Gilbert was the official starter.Organizers also stressed their appreciation to volunteers Pam Firkal, Nathan Halenar, Kristen Halenar, Beth Halenar, Maggie Pribila, Kevin O'Donnell, Rich Gilbert, Mel Gilbert, Melissa Gilbert, Anita Dietrich and Jim Burdess.Summit Hill Fire Police provided traffic control at various intersections. Also assisting was the Summit Hill Police Department.The results were as follows:Overall - Male, Ed Saukis (19:00); Female, Lisa Georgis (22:28).14 and under - Male: 1. Ethan Melber, 2.
